Architect Mark Johnson has long been inspired by the texture produced by traditional Indigenous canoe carving. The design team worked with Jim Barker at British Columbia woodworking studio Barker Manufacturing, to produce Ken and Joan’s cedar door. Its texture was produced using a CNC adze.

In addition to its curved powder-blue cabinets to its bold cutouts and red-tiled entrance, the front facade presents its own set of oversize cutouts. “We wanted to use pure geometries throughout the home,” says architect Marianne Amodio.

Nigel Chouri and Crick King bought a tattered ’50s beach house for $911K and introduced water-resistant features, a Spanish-style plaza, and a dreamy garden ADU.

“The use of corrugated metal “was a very cost-effective cladding solution that pays homage to the metal-clad warehouse buildings in Lawrenceville,” Moss says, “but it does so in a manner that matches the scale of most of the lap-siding homes in the area.” The windows are mostly standard sizes from Pella.

The new kitchen features an integrated steel sink, drawer dishwasher, and custom dish drying rack.

Many of the studio’s details match the main home like the pine floors, the recycled slate tiles, and the exposed galvanized wiring conduits.

Much of Ed’s career is dedicated to climate resilient architecture. “Through my work on environmental design, I was keen to see how much we could sort of make this building perform to reach certain environmental sort of standards,” Ed says.
