A House Designed for the Other
A thoughtful renovation of a modernist home in Bogotá
This project involved the comprehensive renovation of a 263 m² house, part of a 12-unit residential complex designed in 1977 by architects Camacho and Guerrero—prominent figures of the modernist movement in Colombia. The intervention aimed to revitalize the family home and adapt it to contemporary living conditions, while preserving the essential lines of the original design.
The renovation was conceived as a careful balance between respect for the existing architecture and a contemporary proposal tailored to the new residents’ specific needs. The program includes a primary bedroom with walk-in closet and en suite bathroom, two additional bedrooms, a guest bathroom, living-dining area, powder room, home office, laundry area, and several patios.
Beyond functional performance, the home was designed and envisioned for the other: a diverse family composed of people, pets, and nature. Every space was custom-designed, not only in terms of use but also as part of a narrative of empathy and care, where material elements are woven into daily life.
Three core principles guided the design process: the integration of landscaping and vegetation into the interior to bring life to the space and allow for its evolution over time; the generous use of natural light to create bright, egalitarian spaces without hierarchy; and the development of an interior design strategy based on the homeowners’ existing furniture, allowing each piece to retain its personal story while contributing to a cohesive overall concept.
Among the project’s main challenges was creating a sense of openness and clarity despite the home's inward-facing character. At the same time, the design sought to foster a dialogue between architectural elements over forty years old and the contemporary languages introduced, resulting in a harmonious and cohesive interior atmosphere.
The project was completed over the course of eight months, meeting both timeline and budget, thanks to a committed and communicative collaboration between designer and builder.
While the results met the expectations set out in the brief and the clients expressed their satisfaction, it is worth noting that from the outset, the house was conceived as a living laboratory: a dynamic space capable of adapting to changing needs over time.
